Mytholmroyd : Design Workshop 17/2/07

Before we start on the creative projects, every itown has a Design Workshop.

Adam Strickson the deisgn workshop coordinator using examples from around the world discusses buildings in Mythomroyd, what makes a good building, and how the Mytholmroyd group can take ownership of their town by thinking about how they would like their town buildings to be used.

Thinking about buildings

The group discuss what makes a good building, how safe or attractive they are, and what they dislike about buildings from around the world. Then they look at at buildings from their own town, think about the architecture, how buildings are used inside and outside, and what makes an interesting building.

The group then are asked to make an 'exciting building' against the clock, out of rolled up paper sticks showing what they want in a building, what makes it safe, how it can be used, what features it will have etc. This helps the young people to look at their own town in a different way, and helps them work as a team to form decisions about what they would like to see developed in their town.

quote Trying to engage people is the most difficult thing to do as they are constantly being asked to provid answers to adult problems and they never get asked what they do want to talk about quote
